I grew up on the North Shore, in the Fraser Valley and on Vancouver Island. My parents are Stó:lō, Nooksack, Squamish, Haida, Chilean, French, and British. Attending a United World College helped me develop a world view that represents Canada’s mosaic. People see in me that I’m a proud Canadian and proud Indigenous person; this helps with reconciliation. As a flight attendant with Air Canada for the past 35+ years, I participated in the Indigenous Employee Resource Group. Working in Human Resources for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games was both thrilling and exhausting. Learning my Grandmother’s language, Halq’eméylem has been an emotional experience. I am an elected Band Councillor of the Leq’á:mel First Nation.
NSRJ honours the Elders and Knowledge Holders, past, present and future, and acknowledges with gratitude that our work takes place in communities situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam First Nations.
